What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content, entity data, and digital footprint so that AI-powered answer engines — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta AI — cite your brand when users ask relevant questions. Where traditional SEO optimizes for blue-link rankings on a SERP, AEO optimizes for inclusion inside the synthesized answer itself.
AEO works because large language models (LLMs) and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems select citations from a small set of high-trust sources at inference time. Winning that selection requires four things: (1) topically dense, well-structured content with clear question-answer pairs, (2) machine-readable schema markup (FAQPage, HowTo, Article, Organization), (3) strong entity signals across Wikipedia, Wikidata, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, and authoritative third-party mentions, and (4) freshness — most engines re-crawl high-velocity topics weekly.
The category emerged in 2024 as ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Google's SGE crossed mainstream adoption. By 2026, an estimated 15–20% of informational queries on the open web start in an AI engine, and that share grows roughly 3–4 points per quarter. Platforms like Surfaced, Peec.ai, and Profound monitor citation share across engines; Surfaced also generates the remediation content automatically. AEO is best understood not as a replacement for SEO but as its inversion: instead of pulling clicks to your site, you push your facts into the answer.
